Tower and colonnade
Entry for A-100 sculpture competition “Unity in Diversity”

In November 2020, Minsk neighborhood New Bor suffered water and heating cuts attributed to vandalism. For several days people from all over the city were delivering bottles of water and portable radiators in a show of solidarity. The event brought together complete strangers in their desire to help fellow citizens. This phenomenal unity and self-organization must never be forgotten.

To translate this idea into sculpture we refer to two contrasting architectural typologies: the vertical tower and the horizontal colonnade. The former symbolizes the water tower. The latter represents the direct horizontal connections between people. The tower and the colonnade, although different, share the circular shape. Together they are symbols of unity around something meaningful. We do not choose the times we live in, but we do choose the path we have to take.
